As your organization prepares to return to in-person operations, team members who have gotten used to working remotely are preparing for big changes themselves. There’s no question this adjustment will take some time and there might be some growing pains. But one of the best ways to ensure a seamless transition back to the office is prioritizing employee feedback.

As your organization prepares to return to in-person operations, team members who have gotten used to working remotely are preparing for big changes themselves. There’s no question this adjustment will take some time and there might be some growing pains. But one of the best ways to ensure a seamless transition back to the office is prioritizing employee feedback.

Why Employee Feedback is More Important Than Ever

When you ask your employees for their direct feedback, thoughts, and responses about returning to work, you accomplish multiple goals at once. First, you actively demonstrate to them how important their feedback is in the first place. (This can go a long way to boosting employee retention rates!) Additionally, you’re actually given valuable feedback that helps your organization move forward in a positive direction.

Placing Value on Employee Feedback

More than ever, it’s important for your team to know that they, and their feedback, are valued by the leaders in their organization.

Think back to a time when you worked a job that made you unhappy. Chances are, part of that unhappiness came from not feeling valued, heard, or seen. As human beings, it’s our nature to want all of these things. And for a place where we spend a good chunk of our lives, if we don’t feel valued, we’re not likely to become loyal, long-lasting assets.

Now imagine what a difference it could have made if a leader at that job came to you with the express interest of hearing about how you’re feeling, what your struggles are, and what would make your experience in that position better. Further, if the organization acts upon that feedback, you can bet that could have turned your entire experience around!

Collectively, we’ve all been through a lot this past year. Many of your team members may have grown quite comfortable working from home. Now, they’re left feeling nervous and uneasy about heading back to the office. But unless you ask for this kind of feedback, you simply won’t know this. Worse yet, you won’t be able to take measures to help make this transition easier.

(Do you have team members on their way out? Don’t forget to conduct employee exit surveys! Here’s everything you need to know about those)

Tips for Collecting Employee Feedback

With all of this in mind, let’s talk more about collecting employee feedback and some of the best practices for doing so.

Simplicity is Key

First things first: you need to make it easier for your employees to share their feedback. Distributing a 20-page survey they can only complete on their office computer might not be the way to go. So, for starters, we encourage you to stick to simple, straight-forward questions. Then, be sure to create SMS or online polls your employees can complete from the comfort of their own home on the device of their choice.

Consider Question Types

While you’re keeping the questions simple, you also need to ensure you’re giving the employees a chance to speak up on any issues that are important to them. If you use only multiple-choice questions, there’s a chance your employees won’t get to share the specific feedback they were hoping for. A multiple choice survey can still be a good choice. But we also encourage you to offer the opportunity to share open-ended feedback where they can voice whatever is on their mind.

(In addition to collecting employee feedback, we also encourage you to conduct onboarding surveys with new hires. Here’s how)
