Curious how your team members feel about returning to work? Here are the return-to-work survey questions you need to be asking.

Return-to-Work Surveys are More Important than Ever

Raise your hand if you’re like many business owners who are preparing (or are already in the middle of) having their workforces return to in-person operations. If your hand is up, you’re all too familiar with the importance of these surveys. You also know that getting the information you need from these surveys isn’t possible if you don’t ask the right questions.

This return to in-person work places a big change for both employers and employees. Not to mention, it’s a change many welcome and many don’t. With all of that in mind, it’s more important than ever to check in with your team and see how they’re feeling. That’s why many organizations are running surveys to find out what’s on the minds of their team members.

Return-to-Work Survey Questions

To make these surveys as valuable and productive as possible, we’re sharing our top return-to-work survey questions you need to include on these surveys.

General interest return-to-work survey questions

Let’s say you’re not fully convinced that a return to normal operations is what’s best for your business. Perhaps you’ve noticed productivity and employee engagement have skyrocketed since switching to a remote model. In that case, you might be wondering if a return-to-work is the right choice in the first place. Of course, your employees’ opinions will make a big difference in how you make this decision.

So if you’re not sure about returning to in-person operations in the first place, start here with your survey! Ask your employees how they feel about returning to work to test the waters before you make this move. You can also find out if they would prefer a hybrid work model, a completely remote solution, or returning to in-person work.

(Speaking of hybrid workplaces, take a look at this post for tips about running hybrid meetings)

This survey might tell you your team is more excited than ever to get back to work how they used to. Or perhaps you’ll discover they’d rather continue working from home if given the choice. The ultimate decision might still be up to you. But at least with this feedback, you’ll know you are making a decision the majority of your team is on board with.

Questions and concerns

Now, let’s say a return to in-person operations is inevitable. It’s going to happen, but you want to make sure your team feels good about it. One of the return-to-work survey questions you can ask is about any questions or concerns they have about this process.

You could ask a single open-ended question where your employees can answer at length how they’re feeling and what they’re worrying about. Alternatively, you can create online poll questions on specific topics to get more detailed information.

Here are a few examples:

1. Are you looking forward to returning to work?

  1. A) Yes
  2. B) Neutral
  3. C) No

2. What are your biggest concerns related to returning to work?

  1. A) Health and safety
  2. B) Not as convenient or comfortable
  3. C) Travel
  4. D) Costs (transportation, childcare, clothing, etc)
